J. J. Kirkland J. J. Kirkland was one of the early contributors to the liquid chromatography ‘renaissance’ that started in the 1960s.. He studied at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia from which he obtained his A.B. (1948) and his masters degree (1949). in chemistry. He obtained a doctorate in analytical chemistry from the University of Virginia and joined E. I. Du Pont de Nemours Company in Delaware where he was active for many years in basic chromatography research. He authored or co-authored over 100 original papers in liquid chromatography, and authored or edited a number of books on the same subject. He received many awards for his contributions to liquid chromatography and helped in the organization and presentation of many chromatography courses. He was one of the pioneers in the use of small particles in the preparation of high performance liquid chromatography columns and his slurry packing procedures are still in use today.
