Organic solvents, solvents other than water, are organic compounds that are liquids under standard conditions. They are used to dissolve other substances, reduce the viscosity of liquid mixtures and clean or degrease surfaces. Organic solvents are typically volatile, flammable and toxic with low boiling points and high evaporation rates. Examples include acetone, methylene chloride, methanol, perchloroethylene, benzene and hexane.
