Phenols or phenolics are a class of weakly acidic water-soluble organic compounds consisting of one or more hydroxyl groups attached to an aromatic hydrocarbon group. Man-made phenolics are byproducts of petroleum refining and textile and dye manufacturing and are used in the synthesis of many other organic chemicals. Phenol, the simplest member of the group is derived from benzene. Salicylic acid, an aspirin precursor is a phenol as is thymol that is found in thyme. Phenols have antiseptic properties, but are skin irritants and can adversely affect the taste of drinking water.
