Steroids

Steroids are a class of lipids that serve as precursors for vitamins and function as hormones.

Steroids are high molecular weight lipids consisting of a base of four fused rings that vary in their properties due to the functional groups attached to the rings. Most steroids are classified as alcohols. Others are pseudoalkaloids and the aglycone portions of saponins and cardiac glycosides. They are found in both plants and animals, can be produced synthetically and serve as precursor molecules for vitamins like vitamin D. Classes of steroids include corticosteroids produced by the adrenal glands, anabolic, androgenic, oestrogenic, progestogenic and anti-inflammatory steroids. Cholesterol is a steroid as are bile acids. Their most important function is as hormones. Sex hormones that are steroids include estrogen, testosterone and progesterone. Anabolic androgenic steroids are used by athletes to build muscle, increase body mass and reduce recovery time from injuries. These include testosterone and various synthetic alternatives. Synthetic forms of corticosteroids like prednisone are used to relieve swelling and inflammation.
