For the maximum accuracy and precision the syringes need to be automated and, if necessary controlled by a computer, in which case the system can become very expensive indeed. It should also be pointed out that if the necessary skill is developed with practice very satisfactory results can be obtained using glass pipettes manually. There are various devices that are commercially available that will apply samples to a TLC plate either individually or as multiple samples. An example of a device for automatically concentrating a sample and then placing it on a plate is shown in figure 12.
