Figure 22. Sorption Interaction

 

The diagram shows the sorption of a solute molecule on each solvent layer. The solute molecule can interact with either the surface covered with n-heptane or that part of the surface covered with chloroform, or, as depicted in the diagram, with both. In practice, it is more likely that preferential sorption of the solute molecules on that solvent layer where the interactive forces between solute and solvent are greatest will occur. The diagrammatic representation of displacement interaction is shown in figure 23.
